Where will I ride the most?

The most important question before buying a new bike is: where will I ride the most? Nowadays, there are many different bikes with different components that give each bike specific properties. Different types of bikes are created for different terrains to offer the cyclist the best possible cycling experience. This time we present the most important differences between mountain, cross and trekking bikes.

When we decide to buy a new bike, we start thinking about what kind of bike we need at all. Most often we choose between mountain and trekking bikes, which have very different characteristics. Cross-country bikes, which are a hybrid of mountain and trekking bikes, are also becoming increasingly popular. What are the main differences between these three types of bikes? Which one suits which cyclists? For answers to these and many other questions, we invite you to read our article.

Mountain bikes

Mountain bikes, often called MTBs are bikes created for cycling on varied, unpaved surfaces with many obstacles such as roots and rocks. Their most recognizable features are:

  • front and / or rear suspension

  • wide and strongly profiled tires

  • solid frame geometry

  • predominantly flat handlebar

  • small range of gears

They are intended for driving on mountain paths, single tracks ("singles"), side macadam roads and other unpaved surfaces. The terrain on which mountain bikers cycle often also includes rocks, roots, slippery mud and steep ascents and descents. All the above-mentioned properties of mountain bikes make it easier for cyclists to overcome the described terrains. Tire pressure is often lower on mountain bikes than on other bikes, as lower pressure tires have better grip on various, especially slippery terrain. Mountain bike rings are also stronger and more durable than rings of other types of bikes. The frames are made mainly of aluminum or carbon for wheels of higher price ranges. You can choose between models equipped with 26 '', 27.5 '' or 29 '' wheels.

Otherwise, we also distinguish many different types between mountain bikes. They are quite different from each other, and the differences are due to different uses. Depending on the purpose of cycling, mountain bikes are divided into several categories:

  • Downhill (descent)

  • Enduro

  • Freeride

  • Dirt jump

  • Slopestyle

  • Single speed

  • Four cross

  • Dual slalom (parallel slalom)

Trekking bikes

Trekking bikes are a very versatile type of bike with lots of accessories. They are usually equipped with slightly larger 28 '' wheels with narrower and less profiled tires than mountain bikes have. For this reason, trekking bikes are especially suitable for cycling on paved surfaces and undemanding macadam paths. The tires are smoother, but not as smooth as on road (racing) bikes. They are suitable for cyclists, who mostly cycle on asphalt (70%) and occasionally on macadam terrain (30%).

Trekking bikes are mostly equipped with a rear trunk, fenders above the front and rear wheels, chain protection, front and rear lights and a leg. Because of all these accessories, they are also a bit heavier. Spare and replacement parts for trekking bikes are cheaper than spare parts for more specialized bikes because the parts are more versatile.

Trekking bikes have an excellent ratio between gears, so they are also suitable for riding uphill (on an asphalt road). V-brakes are most commonly used. Wheels from the higher price range can be equipped with mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes. More expensive wheels often have a spring-loaded front fork and a spring-loaded seat post. The suspension is less effective than the suspension of mountain bikes, but it still ensures a comfortable ride and prevents the loss of control over the bike even if we drive into a hole. Aluminum frames predominate.

Cross bikes

Cross bikes are a hybrid between mountain and trekking bikes and are becoming the most versatile type of bike. Their tires are wider and more profiled than on trekking bikes. At the same time, they are also narrower and less profiled than on mountain bikes. This means that cross bikes are suitable for riding on paved roads as well as on more varied terrains such as macadam and forest paths. Cycling up the hill is a real pleasure, and the front suspension allows for a safe and confident ride even on easier descents. Cheaper models are equipped with V-brakes and more expensive ones with disc brakes. Similar to trekking bikes, cross bikes are also equipped with 28 '' wheels. The absence of a rear trunk and fenders ensures a very sporty look of the bikes. The right choice for all recreational cyclists who enjoy both flat cycling tours but also love to turn into the mountains.
