Electric Mountain Bikes – Power for the Trails

Electric mountain bikes, commonly known as eMTBs or electric MTBs, combine the handling and off-road capabilities of a mountain bike with the additional support of a powerful electric motor. The result is a bike that can help you climb further, explore longer routes and make demanding terrain more accessible.

At ECONO.EU, you'll find electric mountain bikes for recreational riding, forest roads, technical trails, steep climbs and longer mountain adventures. Our selection covers different frame designs, suspension systems, motor configurations and battery capacities, allowing you to choose an eMTB that matches your terrain, riding style and budget.

Whether you're discovering e-mountain biking for the first time or looking for a more capable bike for challenging trails, the right eMTB can open up an entirely new way to experience the outdoors.

Full-Suspension Electric Mountain Bikes

Full-suspension eMTBs feature suspension at both the front and rear of the bike. They are designed for riders who want increased control, traction and comfort on rough and technical terrain.

Rear suspension helps the bike maintain contact with uneven ground while absorbing rocks, roots and impacts. Combined with a suspension fork, wide tyres, powerful brakes and electric assistance, a full-suspension electric mountain bike is particularly well suited to demanding trails, steep descents and technical mountain riding.

Different suspension travel options are available depending on whether you prioritise efficient trail riding or more aggressive terrain.

Hardtail Electric Mountain Bikes

A hardtail electric mountain bike uses front suspension without rear suspension. The simpler construction can reduce weight, complexity and maintenance while providing excellent performance on gravel, forest roads, smoother trails and mixed terrain.

Hardtail eMTBs are also a versatile choice for riders who want one electric bike for both everyday riding and weekend off-road adventures.

For less technical terrain, a hardtail can provide an attractive balance between performance, efficiency, durability and price.

eMTB Motors & Electric Assistance

The motor is one of the most important components of an electric mountain bike. Most modern eMTBs use a mid-drive motor positioned around the crank area, helping create balanced weight distribution and natural-feeling assistance.

Electric assistance is particularly valuable when climbing. Instead of replacing pedalling, the motor supports the rider's own effort, with different assistance modes allowing you to adjust the amount of support according to the terrain.

Lower assistance can help conserve battery capacity on longer rides, while stronger modes provide additional support for steep climbs and difficult sections.

Motor characteristics such as torque, power delivery, responsiveness and assistance modes can therefore have a significant influence on how an eMTB feels on the trail.

eMTB Batteries & Riding Range

Battery capacity is another important consideration when choosing an electric mountain bike. Higher-capacity batteries can provide additional range, which is particularly useful for longer rides and routes with significant elevation.

However, there is no single fixed range for an eMTB. Actual battery range varies depending on battery capacity, motor assistance level, elevation, terrain, rider weight, temperature, tyre choice and riding style.

A long ride on relatively flat forest roads can consume considerably less energy than repeated steep climbs using a high assistance level.

When comparing electric mountain bikes, battery capacity should therefore be considered together with the motor system, bike weight and the type of riding you plan to do.

Components Designed for Off-Road Riding

An eMTB places different demands on its components than a conventional city or trekking e-bike. The additional weight, motor assistance and demanding terrain make reliable components especially important.

Depending on the model, electric mountain bikes can feature powerful hydraulic disc brakes, wide MTB tyres, robust wheels, suspension forks, rear shocks, wide-range drivetrains and dropper seatposts.

Choosing the appropriate equipment level depends on how demanding your riding will be. A bike intended mainly for gravel roads and recreational trails does not require the same setup as an eMTB regularly used on steep and technical mountain trails.

29", 27.5" and Mixed-Wheel eMTBs

Wheel size also influences how an electric mountain bike handles.

29-inch wheels are popular because of their ability to roll efficiently over obstacles and provide good stability and traction. Some eMTBs use 27.5-inch wheels, while other models combine different front and rear wheel sizes in a mixed-wheel setup.

There is no universal best configuration. The right choice depends on bike geometry, rider size, terrain and the handling characteristics you prefer.

How to Choose the Right Electric Mountain Bike

When choosing an eMTB, start with the type of terrain you expect to ride most often.

For forest roads, gravel and easier trails, a hardtail eMTB can provide a simple and efficient solution. For rougher trails, technical descents and more demanding mountain terrain, a full-suspension electric mountain bike provides additional comfort and control.

You should also consider frame size, geometry, suspension travel, motor characteristics, battery capacity, brakes, drivetrain and overall bike weight.

Correct frame sizing is particularly important. The right size provides better control and a more comfortable riding position, helping you get the most from your electric mountain bike both uphill and downhill.
